The NYC subway commute is an extraordinary hour of forced captivity, especially in the age of profound uncertainty. In it, the rational mind struggles to expunge even our very own consciousness into oblivion. It is an hour devoted to the contemplation of the tribute we pay to the infernal god of WorkJob, as we hurl through a dark cave in tin cans strung together by ambition, anxiety, alienation. Not unlike a Normandy landing, repeated daily every morning for twenty years, next to this sublime existential dive, transcendental meditation and space travel are for pussies. 9/11 was the moment when collective consciousness was re-birthed into the awareness that “WorkJob is a god who DOES swallow people into its smokey fiery gullet!
